I created a conceptual memento for AMC Theaters: a popcorn bucket. The assignment (for a design class) was to create a wooden memento using a laser cutter that would fit in a 4x4x4 in box, and could stand on its own without support.
This memento is inspired by AMC Theaters. Boasting their logo on its front, it could be sold or used as a prize in a promotional giveaway. The design combines a retro- inspired popcorn bucket with the modern AMC logo to create a timeless feeling. On the back, a person’s name is engraved.
The three-dimensional aspect was achieved by stacking layers of wood. Each layer has a different level of popcorn, with the middle layer having the tallest level of popcorn and the outside layers having no popcorn. Each layer has joints that fit into a laser-cut base.
More images are included at the end of the page.
I created the design for the memento in Adobe Illustrator. I designed 4 separate popcorn bucket layers (copying each multiple times in order to create a more three-dimensional shape) and one base. Initially, I planned to engrave the shape of the outside layer onto each popcorn layer, but I realized that that portion of each layer would not show, and it would lengthen my printing time. Because the base size was dependent on the thickness of the wood—I wanted to leave only a small border around the popcorn layers—I waited until I arrived at the Makerspace (where the wood was stored) to create the base and add tabs to the design.
